famous Berlin...

Günter Schabowski

Berlin--a famous and known city has played an important role in the history. However, most of us (especially people from Asia) only have the knowledge from school's history lessons and no chance to visit and feel it in person.

Fortunately, I had a chance to visit the city in summer 2008. At the very first moment, I love the city right after I entered the city and I can strongly feel the atmosphere of the city.

You definitely cannot go to Berlin without visiting the "Berlin Wall." Although it is not like the Chinese Great Wall, it is the most important wall in the world's history. Berlin Wall is not only a hot tourism spot but more important is it is a meeting point of modern and old era, democracy and dictatorship, freedom and enslavement, humanright and oppression.

It is already 19 years after the "Wall" falling down when the moment I stood at the Wall, but its history and meaning did not get disappeared. I cannot describe my feeling with words and I think everyone can only feel it in person.

The city is located within East part of Germany. In order to prevent people to escape from east Berlin to west Berling, the East Germany government started building the wall in 1961. However, there were a lot of people still trying to run away after. But only around 5000 people successed and there were uncountable number of people failed, injured and died.

The falling of the wall was actually an accident. Günter Schabowski misunderstood the instruction from the leaders and he accidently announced that the wall is opened on November 9th in 1989. Thousands and thousands people walked on the street and tore down the wall. Therefore, the wall became part of the history and it gradually impel the reunion of both sides one year after.

I strongly recommand people to visit Berlin if you have a chance. Berlin doesn't have many business or a shopping area, but it has a special attraction. I am sure I would love to visit this special city again in the future.
